The best logo design agencies

A logo has to work at the size of a favicon and on the side of a building, in one color and in motion, and still mean something in ten years. That’s a lot to ask of one small mark. These four studios have designed logos that pass the test, from app icons for startups to symbols almost everyone recognizes.

Clay Global logo

1. Clay Global

Location
San Francisco HQ, remote-first
Signature project
Pumpt logo and logo animation

For a tech company, the logo is seen most often as an app icon, a favicon and a loading animation. Clay designs marks for those conditions: simple enough to read at tiny sizes, built to animate, and tested in the actual product. Its services include logo design and logo animation alongside the wider identity, as in the minimal, animated mark for Pumpt. Because the same team designs the website and product, the logo arrives already working in context.

Mission Control logo

2. Mission Control

Location
San Francisco, team distributed across time zones
Signature project
Client work not yet published

Most startups need a logo quickly and then need it to work everywhere at once: the website, the app, the pitch deck and social profiles. Mission Control’s senior designers explore many directions with the help of AI, then refine one mark and build the essentials around it so the founder isn’t left with a logo and nothing else. The same team can carry it into the website and product.

Early-stage and VC-backed startups; client list not public

Brand sprints and ongoing design support, working directly with founders

Location
New York
Signature project
NBC peacock

Founded in 1957, Chermayeff & Geismar & Haviv designed many of the most recognizable logos in the United States: the Chase octagon, the red O of Mobil, the PBS faces and the yellow frame of National Geographic. In 1986 it modernized the NBC peacock by removing five feathers and turning it to face right, a lesson in updating a famous mark without losing it. Led today by Tom Geismar and Sagi Haviv, the studio’s recent work includes logos for Warner Bros. Discovery and Discovery+.

Pentagram logo

4. Pentagram

Location
New York, London, Berlin, Austin
Signature project
Mastercard logo simplification

Pentagram’s logo work shows how much can be gained by taking things away. Its redesign of the Mastercard logo reduced the brand to its two overlapping circles, a mark simple enough to be recognized without the name. It also redesigned Slack’s logo, replacing a complex hash symbol with a cleaner system that works at small sizes. Each project is led by a single partner, so you choose a designer as much as a firm.

What a logo has to handle

Before you brief an agency

Decide whether you need a new logo or a refined version of the current one, since many brands have more equity than they think. Check trademark availability early. And list every place the logo will appear, from app icons to signage.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a professional logo cost?

It varies widely. Startups can get a professional mark as part of a brand sprint; established studios charge far more for global brands, where research and testing are extensive.

Should a logo say what the company does?

Usually not. The most memorable logos are simple and distinctive rather than literal. The brand’s name, messaging and experience explain what it does.

Can we just get a logo without a full identity?

You can, but a logo alone rarely makes a brand recognizable. Color, type and imagery do much of the work.

How do we know if a logo is good?

Test it at small sizes, in one color, in motion and next to competitors. If it stays clear and distinctive in all of them, it’s working.

How long does a logo design project take?

A focused logo project can take four to eight weeks. Redesigning a famous mark can take months of research and testing.
