The best branding agencies in Chicago

Chicago’s design scene grew up around big companies, big institutions and big brands on supermarket shelves, and it still shows. The city has some of the best packaging studios in the country, plus smaller firms that brand its museums, transit and neighborhoods. These seven are based in Chicago and have identity work you can check.

Google Cloud “Cloudstyle” design system

VSA Partners has been designing brands out of Chicago since 1982, and its strength is systems big enough for global companies to actually use. For Google Cloud’s rebrand it built Cloudstyle, a design system that lets many internal teams produce work that looks like one company. Its case studies also include Chime and BNY, which got a new identity for its 240th anniversary. The firm combines brand strategy, identity and campaign work under one roof.

Span logo

2. Span

Location
Chicago
Signature project
Regional Transportation Authority identity

Span was founded in 2020 by Bud Rodecker and John Pobojewski, and in a few years it has rebranded a surprising amount of Chicago. It designed the identity for the region’s transit authority, rebranded the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum around the prairie, and helped rename the invasive Asian carp “copi” so people would eat it. The work is smart, typographic and often funny.

Consumer packaging, large corporate brand systems, and cultural and civic identities. The city has strong studios in all three.

Are Chicago agencies cheaper than New York or San Francisco?

Often somewhat, especially at mid-size studios. Large firms price similarly across cities.

How long does a packaging redesign take?

A redesign for one product line usually takes three to six months, including testing and production files. A full brand renovation across many products can take a year.
