The best branding agencies in New York

New York has more branding agencies than any other city, which makes the shortlist harder, not easier. The range runs from five-person studios in Greenpoint to firms that have been drawing corporate marks since the 1950s. These nine have a studio in the city and published identity work to judge them by.

Red Antler logo

1. Red Antler

Location
Brooklyn, New York
Signature project
Casper launch brand

Red Antler made its name on the first wave of direct-to-consumer startups, and Casper is the project most people still point to: a mattress company that needed to feel friendly, a little sleepy and unlike every furniture store before it. The studio works with founders before launch, often naming the company and building the identity, website and first campaigns together. Allbirds came through the same Brooklyn studio.

COLLINS logo

2. COLLINS

Location
New York and San Francisco
Signature project
Dropbox rebrand

COLLINS designs identities for products that millions of people open every day, and its Dropbox rebrand is the clearest example: the company stopped looking like a storage utility and started looking like a place where creative work happens, with a bold palette and a loose, illustrated system. The studio, founded by Brian Collins, treats a brand as something that has to behave well in an interface, not just on a poster.

Clay Global logo

3. Clay Global

Location
New York office at 148 Lafayette St; HQ San Francisco
Signature project
Terragraph (Meta): visual identity and marketing website

For most tech companies the brand is experienced inside the product, on the website and in the app, long before anyone sees a billboard. Clay Global designs all three with one team, so the identity, the marketing site and the interface come out of the same decisions rather than three separate vendors. For Meta’s Terragraph it set up the visual identity and built and maintained the marketing site. Its New York office on Lafayette Street gives East Coast clients in-person working sessions with the same team.

Website
cghnyc.com
Location
New York (Flatiron)
Signature project
Chase Bank octagon

Chermayeff & Geismar & Haviv has been designing trademarks in New York since 1957, and a surprising number of them are still in use: the Chase octagon, the NBC peacock and the PBS mark among them. Partner Sagi Haviv now leads the firm’s work for companies and institutions that want one symbol to last for decades. The process is narrow on purpose: the firm focuses on the mark and the rules around it.

Gretel logo

5. Gretel

Location
Brooklyn, New York
Signature project
New York City FC identity (2024)

Gretel started in 2005 making on-air graphics for TV networks, and its identities still move better than most. That background shows in its New York City FC redesign, which built an electric palette and a pictogram library of city icons for a club that has to compete for attention with every other team in town. The studio’s client list runs from Netflix and MoMA to RISD and Japanese publisher Kodansha.

Mother Design logo

6. Mother Design

Location
Brooklyn, New York, with studios in London and Los Angeles
Signature project
Park Lane Hotel identity

Mother Design’s New York studio rebranded the Park Lane Hotel on Billionaires’ Row and deliberately walked away from the gold-serif look of traditional luxury. The same studio refreshed Tripadvisor’s logo and built an identity for Callen-Lorde, the LGBTQ health center, drawn from the protest graphics of the 1980s. The work tends to be expressive and a little irreverent, even for serious clients.

7. &Walsh

Location
New York
Signature project
Zooba New York launch

Jessica Walsh founded &Walsh in 2019, and the studio’s work is the most visibly art-directed on this page: bright, photographic and built to stop a thumb mid-scroll. When Egyptian street-food chain Zooba opened its first US location in New York, &Walsh branded it. Other identities include Plenty, the vertical farming company, and Coconut Cult.

Order logo

8. Order

Location
Brooklyn (Greenpoint), with a second office in Miami
Signature project
Herman Miller brand identity

Jesse Reed and Hamish Smyth left Pentagram in 2017 to start Order, and the studio is best known for disciplined, typographic systems with long lives. Its work for Herman Miller refined the logo system and guidelines while keeping the famous M untouched. For Kickstarter’s tenth anniversary it redrew the K mark and refreshed the identity around it. Locally, the studio rebuilt the identity for Gage & Tollner, the 19th-century Brooklyn chop house.

Signature project
Southwest Airlines “Heart” rebrand

Lippincott runs the kind of rebrand that touches aircraft, stores and thousands of employees at once. Its Southwest Airlines program put a heart on the belly of every plane and carried it through the fleet, airports and app. The firm also evolved the Starbucks siren and gave Walmart its spark. Expect a large team, a long research phase and a rollout plan.

Hiring a branding agency in New York

Frequently asked questions

How many branding agencies are in New York?

Thousands, if you count freelancers and marketing shops. The list of studios with a strong record of published identity work is much shorter, which is why this page lists nine.

Do I need a New York agency if my company is based here?

No. Most branding work now runs remotely. A local studio helps when you want in-person workshops, or when the brand has to reflect the city itself, as with a sports club or a hotel.

How long does a rebrand with a New York agency take?

A focused identity project usually takes two to four months. A full program with strategy, naming and rollout can take six months or more.
